FOLIGNO
A city modern in appearance surrounded by gentle hills, Foligno’s lordly historic centre is enclosed within ancient walls. Looking out on the central Piazza della Repubblica is the stupendous door to the Duomo, dating to the thirteenth century. The many noble palaces worth visiting include Palazzo Trinci, the one-time residence of the powerful family that governed the city between the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, and now home to the picture gallery, the archaeological museum, and the multimedia museum of tournaments and jousts. Every year, at its Palio della Quintana, the city recreates the climate of a seventeenth/century tournament, with a joust and a parade in historic dress.
