GUALDO CATTANEO

A castle perched on the peaks of the Monti Martani mountain range, it was built in about 975 at the order of the Germanic count Edoardo Cattaneo. Strategically positioned, it has always enjoyed considerable importance, with neighbouring cities quite interested in conquering it. The most important monument is its Rocca – a triangular fort built in the late fifteenth century. The church of Santi Antonio e Antonino, housing a Sienese-school tempera tablet from 1350 depicting the Madonna with Child, is worth a visit. Of considerable artistic importance is the Crucifixion fresco conserved at the church of Sant’Agostino. The system of castles stretching along an itinerary of more than 50 km around the city is also interesting to see.
